The Story of Music City Ice Cream

Our Story begins 12 years ago during a casual conversation with an old childhood friend. We had grown up together on the streets of Staten Island, NY. Ours was a quiet, working-class neighborhood of hard-working men and women. During the summertime, families would gather on their porches and pass the time with neighbors walking by.

One of the highlights of summer evenings would be when the ice cream man would come rolling down the street, bells ringing, calling out to kids, young and old to come and enjoy some ice cream. My friends Dad, like all Dad’s at that time worked several jobs. One of his jobs was he owned an ice cream truck and was our “ice cream man”. He ran his business at night, after a hard day’s work, and his son’s all helped him to put food on the table.

That memory got us to talking about how that truck had taught my friend so much; how to maintain inventory, deliver superior customer service, make change, smile (often and genuinely), market your business, responsibility and timeliness.

I have 3 sons (9, 11 and 13 at the time) and these were some of the values I wanted to pass onto them. I wanted to teach them how to run their own business and develop the values that hard work and commitment can instill.

Believe it or not, 2 weeks later, a 1967 all original, Good Humor Ice Cream truck showed up on E-Bay.

I called the owner, flew out to Danforth VA the next day and saw a truck that might best be described as in need of a little TLC. I saw the possibilities, however and the rarity of this piece of Americana (there are a little more than 100 left on the road) helped make my decision. I flew home that afternoon the proud, but nervous owner, of a 60-year-old ice cream truck. Music City Ice Cream was born!

I had never done any restoration work and my days of working on cars was a long time ago, but with some help from my sons, Chilton’s, friends, the guys at O’Reilly’s and You-Tube, I set about the task of restoring the 1967 Ford F250.

Today we are proud to deliver all those values to our customers, as well as delicious ice cream in our restored, original, ’67 Ford F250 Good Humor Ice Cream Truck.  The experience of bringing the truck back to life was a thrill for us and we think you will be equally thrilled when we bring it to your house!
